Character Creation

Character Creation for Freebooters

Step 1: Choose a race
This is as per the D&D Player’s Handbook, but there are several modifications to races, and a few new races, all detailed on the Races page. Select the race you want, and note the special abilities, including size and speed.

Step 2: Choose a class
This is again like the Player’s Handbook, but there are a few new options available, detailed in the Classes section. You begin at level 1. Note your class abilities, including hit points, skills, saving throw proficiencies, and so on.

Step 3: Determine ability scores
Allocate the following numbers as desired among your 6 ability scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8. Then apply your racial modifiers. Determine your ability modifiers from the chart on page 13 of the Player’s Handbook.

Step 4: Select a background
All of the backgrounds listed in the Player’s Handbook are available, and there are additional options detailed on the Backgrounds page. Your background grants you additional skills, proficiencies, equipment, and features. Use your background to determine your personality trait, ideal, bond, and flaw. For each of these, you may roll randomly, or you may select one or create a unique one.

Step 5: Select an alignment
Select a non-evil alignment, as per the Player’s Handbook.

Step 6: Determine equipment
Use the default starting equipment for your class and background. You may spend your starting money to purchase additional equipment if you like. New equipment is detailed in the Equipment section.

Step 7: Create final details
Create a name and description for your character, and a short story about how he came to be in the group.
